Privacy
Draft notice for the MVP. It must be reviewed against the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 before launch.
Visitors
You can read everything on this site without an account. We do not use advertising trackers. Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs for security and reliability. We use Vercel Web Analytics and Speed Insights to count page views and measure how fast pages load. They use no cookies and do not identify you; we report only the page address (never search terms or other query text), and nothing from the editorial admin.
Your state
When you choose a state (or “All states”), we save that choice in a first-party cookie called po_state for one year, so pages can lead with that state. It holds only the state's short name; nothing else about you is stored, and you can change it at any time with the State button at the top of the page. To suggest a state the first time you visit, we use the approximate region our hosting provider derives from your internet connection; it is only a suggestion and is never saved. If you tap “Use my location”, your browser asks your permission first, and the match to a state happens on your device: your location is never sent to us or anyone else. State outlines are from geoBoundaries (CC BY 4.0).
Email sign-ups and the waitlist
If you ask us to tell you when a state goes live, or follow a profile, we store your email address and what you asked for, and use it only to send that kind of update. Sign-ups are visible only to our editors and are never published. To be removed, write to us at the address below.
Joining the waitlist also stores the state you chose, and the name, role and one-line answer you give if you choose to give them. We use them to decide which state to document next and to describe, in applications for funding, who is waiting and where. We may quote an answer, never with a name or an address attached. The number of people waiting is shown on that page; nothing else about anyone is public.
Google Analytics (only if you agree)
If you choose “Accept analytics”, we load Google Analytics, which sets first-party cookies to count visits and measure which pages are useful. We send Google the address of each page you view (without search terms or other query text), and a few counts: that a search was run (not what you searched for), that a correction request was sent (not its contents or your email), and which state you chose in the state picker. Google signals and advertising features are switched off. If you decline, Google Analytics is not loaded at all. You can change your choice at any time with “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page; withdrawing removes the cookies.
Correction requests and evidence
When you send a correction request we store what you write, any links you provide, your email address and (optionally) your name. We use your email address only to follow up on that request. Submissions are visible only to our editorial staff and are never published. Published corrections describe what changed, not who asked.
Officials
Information about officials is limited to their public office and public conduct, drawn from public sources. We do not publish private contact details, home addresses or information about family members who do not hold public office.
